How come car makers don't advertise their size of their vehicles anymore? Are they too afraid people who associate 'big' with 'inefficient'? A larger car is almost always, more comfortable and easier to design around than a small one.

probably due to just about everything being the same size. Japan will always be limited by the tax regulations for car sizes (I think the Lexus sedan is right at within millimeters of that limit)
There's been a downward trend in cars, so big has been associated with inefficient/old. When all the dinosaurs are laid to rest, then the small mammals such as the CVCC could evolve larger to become the dominant species, despite their increasing use of resources.
